Foundations for action in First Nations cancer control

This report examines pathways and leading models of cancer care in rural, remote and isolated First Nations communities

Walk a Mile in My Moccasins: This report from 2012 includes an environmental scan and analysis of the pathways and leading models of cancer care in First Nations communities. The report also looks at leading culturally-responsive, cancer-control resources from those communities.

This report aims to build a comprehensive understanding of the reality of cancer care pathways for First Nations communities across Canada. Provincial profiles are found in the appendices.

The report’s data reveals that the issues, gaps and barriers to cancer care fall into three themes:

  • Access
  • Partnerships
  • Jurisdiction

These themes not only resonate through the data collected, they are also present in the leading practices and models of care that are working to make a difference.
